Coquelicots du Lubéron

Provence painting of poppies

Oil on Canvas, 16×20″

This is a painting I just finished in preparation for one of my upcoming shows. Can you tell that red is one of my favorite colors? There is an abundance of it in the springtime in Provence and also in Tuscany. This is a scene off of a country road outside of Lourmarin. Lourmarin is a small village located in the Lubéron region of Provence. My husband Dave and I explored all around this area a couple of years ago, and had a spectaular time visiting the area at the height of spring.

Jeff and David,
Thank you so much! Of course I always like nice feedback, but especially coming from two accomplished painters such as yourselves. :-)

very strong piece.

Usually with such complements used as this, artists mess up with too much. Where everything is shouting, nothing gets heard. Reserve is usually a way to assure the handling of such color.

I wouldn’t say that red and reddish orange is reserved, but it is handled well and I find it most interesting to look at for this reason. The composition well suited. Very lovely…

Larry,
Thank you so much. Another very accomplished painter commenting on my blog! I may soon blush. :-) I don’t think anyone would accuse me of being habitually reserved in terms of color. LOL! I think what works here is the predominantly cool colors in the rest of the painting. Not muted, but at least cool, which helps the red to pop.

I do love the more subtle, as you say, reserved paintings as well, where the work is predominantly muted and then there is a burst of color…otherwise known as a “color surprise.”

Best wishes,
Jennifer

Hi Jennifer,

I came across your website while looking for scenes of France to paint for my living room. I absolutely love your style. I do portraits but love to do landscapes too, I’m working on loosining up my style some. Love your work.

Thank you Alicia! I know what you mean about wanting to loosen up. It is the quest of many artists and I am no exception! One thing that I’ve noticed in my own work is that if I have a good handle on the drawing, it is easier to loosen up with my painting. Confidence in my drawing allows me not only a strong foundation, but greater freedom to get loose and let the paint be paint. I think that is why I admire the work of so many illustrators-turned-painters. They have the drawing part nailed! Take care and keep up the good work!
