Here is a new painting of the walkway along the grounds of the Villa Monestero in Varenna:

Even when it’s 30 degrees outside here in Virginia, painting gives me the luxury of transporting myself back to a beautiful warm spring day on beautiful Lake Como in Italy! This oil painting measures 36″h x 24″ wide. For purchasing information, please contact me.

Again a place I recognize – and again a beautiful painting!
I love the bright blue you used in the shadows and the distant trees – what colour is it? And what brand do you normally use?
I’ll keep my eye on your blog and especially the 2008 workshop news!
Hi Regula-
Thanks again for your comments. My most commonly used blue is an ultramarine blue mixture. I say mixture because I don’t think I ever use any color directly from the tube. The shadows on the ground are probably ultramarine blue and touches of alizarin crimson, cad. red light and white. The distant pines would probably have used ult. blue and cad. red light and white. And the distant mountain was likely cooled by mixing utlramarine with either severes blue or a tiny touch of pthalo green, then greyed somewhat with cad red light. or cad orange, plus white. It is really hard to remember exact mixtures, but this is what I am likely to do if I were to try and recreate those colors again.
I like a variety of brands of oil paint depending on the color- Windsor & Newton for some, Rembrandt, and Gamblin for others. I can mix them up a bit, but I always stick with professional grade.
Thanks for your interest- I’ll be happy to keep you informed about any workshops I have coming up!
