Continuing on with my Lake Como series, here is a newly finished 16×20″ oil painting inspired by our recent trip to Lake Como, Italy.

One day during our visit we decided to splurge with a private boat ride around the lake and a tour of the beautiful Villa Balbianello. On our way to the villa, the driver indulged us by stopping often so that we could drink in the sites and take plenty of photos.

With this cold February weather, I naturally long for warm, sundrenched places. So lately I’ve found myself pouring through sketches and photos from our last trip to beautiful Lake Como. This is a little watercolor/pen and ink sketch I did from the balcony of our hotel in the lovely lake town of Bellagio:

We had great mountain views on three sides. This brings back some warm, sunny memories for me, painting and listening to the water lapping on the lake shores below. The image size is about 6×8″, done on 7×9″ paper. For more information about this painting, please contact me.

Today’s painting is a view looking out over Lake Como from the grounds of Villa Balbianello. Villa Balbianello is located in Lenno at the far end of the Lavedo peninsula. This position gives it the most lovely views from several sides of the property.

This painting measures 6×6 inches. It is done on a gallery wrapped canvas, and the edges are finished off in deep blue/gray color that compliments the painting.

Today’s painting is of a corner full of flowers in the village of Giverny, where Claude Monet made his home. It measures 8×8″ and is oil on gallery wrapped canvas. The edges of this painting are finished off with a complimentary green color, so no other framing is needed:

I think it was probably Monet who started the trend of pink stucco houses with green shutters, but there are several buildings in this little town with this color combination. While I’m sure the plantings are intentional and well-planned, hollyhocks, roses, lilies, and other flowers seemed to just grow out of any available stone crevice in this town. I sure wish I could say the same for my own garden!

Whenever I travel, I often find myself painting and photographing windows and doors. To me they suggest a both a kind of intimacy and a bit of mystery. In France and Italy many people take great care in dressing their windows and doorways with pots of beautiful flowers. Shutters and doors are often painted a lovely bright color, which over time fades and mellows from exposure to the elements.
This little window lives somewhere in the tiny French Provincial village of Ansouis.

How nice it must be to enjoy the heady smell of jasmine each time you open a window! This painting measures 6×6 inches. It is done on a gallery wrapped canvas, and the edges are finished off in a color that compliments the painting:
