My plein air demo featured on EmptyEasel.com!

24 08 2007

Just a quick note of announcement to say that my plein air painting demonstration is being featured today over at Empty Easel.com.  Thanks so much to Dan for the feature!

I’ve referred to  this site before, and I’ll say it again…If you haven’t yet visited this content-rich website, I highly recommend a visit. Empty Easel has a lot of great articles, tips and features especially useful to the artist.  His section on selling art online  is unlike anything I’ve seen elsewhere. Dan takes a serious and in-depth look at different online venues, with side-by-side comparisons of features, costs, ease of use, etc. Lots of data to mull over here and elsewhere on the site. Check it out!

hi, I saw your work on Empty Easel and I had a few questions. I have been wanting to do some plein air work but am sort of afraid of diving in. I think it is the whole finished product I am afraid of as well as the time. How long do you spend working on a painting and what do you do with light changes? or do you choose a specific time when you will have the most time?

Thanks!

Hi Misti,
Thanks for your comment. I can really empathize with your concerns. We all want the time and energy we devote to something to bring us some kind of benefit and return. But if you can put aside the need to come away with a finished product–at least for a while, you will find great benefit in the learning you gain just from the act of painting and observing from nature.

I’ll spend some time blogging with more indepth thoughts about this soon, but for now, try painting in the morning (I like early around 7:30 or 8 a.m.) for no more than 2 hrs. To start, work small, as in 5×7, 6×8, maybe 8×10. This will make you feel less woeful if you end up calling it a wash, and it will also allow you more chances to have small successes. I say just do it! Have fun and allow yourself this time to learn and nothing more. That is how we grow as artists!
