Summer Garden painting, Bellevue style

This scene is one I’ve been “stalking” for a few days in the Bellevue neighborhood where I live. I’ve written before about my North Richmond ‘hood, and how many avid gardners live around here. On another one of our evening walks, we passed this adorable yard with a sunny garden of sunflowers and zinnias, and I knew I wanted to come back by and paint it. I especially liked this scene when the sunflowers were set against the neighboring house, at around 9 - 10 a.m., when the bungalow was mostly in shadow:

This so gorgeous! Love this so much. I live in Brian Park, just off Lakeside Ave,
I can see Franco’s Clothing from my front yard, the pet store & Lakeside Vets. is just around the corner.
I know what you mean about the gardens around here, they are very beautiful. One of my favorites is the yard of an artist , who has trimmed his bush in his front yard in the shape of a duck.You know that yard.
You caught the garden perfectly.

Thanks so much you guys. It was such a happy little scene– Such fun to paint. I’ve got houseguests until mid week, but I’ve seen another house in the ‘hood that I’m stalking for after they leave ;-). Amy- yes, so being in the area you know what I’m talking about! I’ve learned so much about gardening just walking around here.

Wonderful! Looks very different for you in color, temp, contrast, and brushwork. How much was this difference due to working on the hard board surface? Those sunflowers look HOT!!!

Marilyn & Rick–glad you like it! Marilyn, I used to work on board a lot, and am getting back into it more lately with plein air. It’s different from canvas–less grip, but I like it. I did’t really consider this a whole different style for me in brushwork or color, but maybe I am just too close to it to be objective? I did consciously choose to keep the background house fairly simple and to showcase the sunflowers- with a cool complementary (or split complementary) color contrast.

Now, back to the houseguests! Will be blogging and painting again soon. Thanks guys!

Also, your sunflowers remind me of a certain Dutch painter…

Ash, Thanks for your wonderful message. Hey, I’ve never tried poppy diving but I’m willing to give it a try! And yes, it’s hard see sunflowers and NOT think of that certain Dutchman. But I’ll take the comparison any day!
