Dusk Approaches
28 07 2009If you’re tired of French paintings, don’t read this post! I’ve been on a roll. Here’s another one of the Dordogne, with my favorite light and a play of long shadows:
“Dusk Approaches”
Oil on Linen, 20×24″
The paint is thick and it’s still a bit soft, but if it sets up enough to receive a retouch varnish, I may include it my show of French works that opens next week. This new piece was done on a rather rougher weave linen than I’m accustomed to using, but since I’m trying to economize, I’m working my way through the art supplies I have on hand (rather than just ordering more of my ’preferred’ materials.)
The linen is a quality product, just not as fine a weave as I normally like; so up to now these canvases have been collecting dust. It came stretched and pre-primed, but I did add a couple of extra coats of gesso beforehand (with sanding in between) which helped to smooth the surface a little. But still its grip on the paint was significant, so some use of the palette knife came in mighty handy.
One of these days I will do a serious update to my website and post my new paintings there as well. But in the meantime, please contact me for purchasing info.

Beautiful scene, and it really does feel like dusk. Great work!
All these French paintings for your show are wonderful!!!!!!!!
I can’t even decide which I like the best, they are all so strong- it should be a very successful opening and I wish you the best.
I was sorry to hear of your tendonitis and I hope you are on the mend. It doesn’t seem to keep you from blogging and for that I’m glad so we can see your beautiful work.
On “Dusk Approaches” your color tones look warmer and more toward the gold and earthy tones. Did you use your usual palette or did you just adjust your mixing or I was thinking you started with a yellow or orange toned canvas?
I really love these paintings you’re doing from France. They’re beautiful and I love the impressionistic way you’ve handled them, AND your strong colors.
I’m looking forward to seeing the rest!
Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you - my son is in France right now, and I’m hoping that he brings me some great photos to inspire me to paint some French scenes! I put my order in for hundreds of photos! He’s been taking some classes at King’s College in London and is doing some traveling on weekends. He’s been to Ireland and is heading to Germany in a week. I’m keeping my fingers crossed!
Thanks for the encouragement y’all. I’ve really been enjoying the work I’ve been doing for this show. Marilyn, you have an astute eye. Yes, I used a different palette to acheive that warmth. See my next post for the details.
Vickie- What a magnificent trip you’re son is on! Those photos I saw on your blog are already looking stunning. I’d love to venture over to England and Ireland some time to paint (if I can ever get out of France and Italy that is!) It also looks like you don’t have far to go where you are to find landscape painting inspiration.
