I’ve been looking at a lot of “painting a day” blogs and other art sights. I came across yours and your paintings made me very happy. Beautiful work.

Brendy,
Thank you for the kind comment about my paintings! I really enjoyed looking at your colorful pastels as well. Loved the painting entitled “Biscuit”. Reminds me of my own kitties who lounge with similar abandon.

Best wishes,
Jennifer

I noticed that you recommend birch ply for painting, do you prefer this over masonite panels? If so why? You mentioned warping, do you prime front and back at the same time?

jennifereyoung (12:39:49) :

Hi Andre,
The main reason I recommended birch as an option is because is it very lightweight but still very sturdy, so not prone to warping. Weight is always a concern for the plein air painter so I’m always trying to figure out how to lighten my load, particularly if I’m traveling. Masonite is fine too, though fairly heavy if you’re carrying a number of panels along with all of the other painting gear.

Yes, it’s a good idea to prime the front and back of the panels evenly if you’re going to paint straight on the wood (prime front, let dry, prime back.) If you’re mounting a primed canvas on your board, I wouldn’t think you’d need to prime the back.
