France is such an amazing country filled with diversity and great beauty. The region of Provence abounds with fields of poppies, sunflowers, and lavender bursting with fragrance and color. Everywhere you turn, there are hundreds of paintings, waiting to be made! Equally beautiful is the region of Normandy, full of soft rolling hills, willow trees and the biggest roses I've ever seen! I had the great privilege in 2003 to paint in Giverny en plein air. I received special permission to paint in Monet's garden on a day when it is closed to the general public, and the experience is one that I will never forget!

About the Painting: This painting of a lavender field and vineyards recalls an area of Provence that I visited in lavender season almost 10 years ago named La Drome Provencal. I was so fortunate to have the opportunity to paint there on location. I can still hear the soft, low hum of honey bees and smell the heady perfumed fragrance of lavender in the air. I have painted many studio paintings of this region since, but the experience of painting en plein air in therehas helped to sear it in my memory.
