“En Plein Air” is a French phrase meaning “in the open air”. In painting it refers to the little field studies done on location, a practice central to the approach of the French Impressionists. For me, painting on location is a way to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and the play of light, and to capture the fleeting moment and cement my impressions of a particular location, time and place. These may be used as references for larger studio pieces, but they also stand on their own for their freshness and immediacy. * You can find even more of Jennifer’s plein air work in the gouache gallery.

This is part of a series of plein air paintings of the James River in Richmond, VA, that I have been exploring for some time. This view is right in the heart of downtown, not far from the historic Tredegar Ironworks. Golden light from the setting sun dances across the sky and water, and kisses the footings from a long forgotten bridge.
