Class
description:
While
painting the landscape by direct observation in nature is
ideal, there is much to be learned from studying landscape
painting in the studio. In this studio workshop we will
focus on the building blocks that help to acheive a strong
foundation for your landscape paintings, whether they're
created in the studio or en plein air.
Lectures
and demonstrations will include general oil painting tools
and tips, color mixing, and methods to create a strong design
and convincing illusion through the use of color, composition,
value and shape.
The
small class size will allow for a more in-depth and personalized
experience, as well as adequate time for painting and group
critique.
Studio
classes are limited to 6 students, so register
now to reserve your spot!
To
view a general list of supplies, see below. A detailed supply
list, as well as recommendtions on hotels and restaurants
will be sent to those who register.

Supplies
list
Below
is a general list of supplies that I recommend. A detailed
supply list will be sent upon registration for the workshop
Oil
paints: It is highly recommended that you choose professional
grade oil paints over student grade. Brands such as Windsor
& Newton, Gamblin, Rembrandt, etc. are readily available
in most art supplies stores online and in retail locations.
Below
are colors I use and will most likely be on my palette for
my painting demonstrations:
Cadmium
Yellow Light, Indian Yellow, Alizarin Crimson Permanent,
Permanent Rose, Ultramarine Blue, Windsor Green or Pthalo
Green, Titanium White
- Container
for washing brushes (Holbein brush cleaner, wide mouth
jar, or something similar)
- Additional
smaller container if you want- for holding painting medium,
or to hold clean turpenoid/mineral spirits (a small wide-mouthed
jar or small can like a tuna can works well)
- Odorless
mineral spirits or Turpenoid Natural
- Painting
medium, if you use it (e.g. Galkyd lite, Liquin or Wingel)
- Portable
palette- wood, glass or plexi backed with wood, cardboard,
or foamcore (Tear off paper palettes are not recommended.)
- Paper
towels
- Plastic
bags for trash- (plastic grocery store bags with handles
work well)
- Sketch
pad, pencil, eraser
- 4
- 8 painting surfaces; primed stretched canvases, canvas
panels or canvas boards no larger than 12x16. Cardboard
backed canvas panels are not recommended.
- An
assortment of natural bristle brushes in a range of sizes
from 2 to 12. Flats, rounds, and filberts. Also bring
a small round or rigger for detail. One or two softer
sable or synthetic are optional. I like flats or "cat's
tongue" shape.
- Palette
knife (with the inverted handle, not kind that is flat
from tip to handle)
- Apron
or smock to protect clothing
- Lightweight
portable easel ( Julian half box or similar) or pochade
box with tripod.
- Portable
chair (optional- we will have some chairs, but I recommend
standing when you paint)
- Other
useful items: latex gloves, hand cleaner or baby wipes,
camera, snacks.
