Vibrant plein air and studio landscape paintings

French Landscapes Gallery

France is such an amazing country filled with diversity and great beauty. The region of Provence abounds with fields of poppies, sunflowers, and lavender bursting with fragrance and color. Everywhere you turn, there are hundreds of paintings, waiting to be made! Equally beautiful is the region of Normandy, full of soft rolling hills, willow trees and the biggest roses I've ever seen! I had the great privilege in 2003 to paint in Giverny en plein air. I received special permission to paint in Monet's garden on a day when it is closed to the general public, and the experience is one that I will never forget!

"Market Day in the Lot Valley", Oil on linen 24x36"

"Market Day in the Lot Valley", Oil on linen 24x36"

Price: US $2395 unframed, or $2625 framed.

For options and purchasing, please contact us.

About the painting:

The Lot Valley is such a picturesque location, with rolling hills, charming villages and intese varioations of rich, lush greens. The figures heading off to the village market help to convey a sense of scale to the majestic trees in the valley. This painting was completed in my studio from studies and photos made on site.

"Beynac", Oil on canvas, 36x48""

"Beynac", Oil on canvas, 36x48""

Price: US $4500 unframed.

For options and purchasing, please contact us.

About the painting:

The village of Beynac sits on the edge of the Dordogne River in the heart of Southern France. At its pinnacle rests the extraordinary Chateau de Beynac, where Richard the Lionheart met his death! My visit to Beynac was one of the highlights of my painting trip to this beautiful region of France.

"Poppies in a Fallow Field", Oil on inen, 16x20"

"Poppies in a Fallow Field", Oil on inen, 16x20"

Price: US $1225 unframed, or $1375 framed.

For options and purchasing, please contact us.

About the painting:

In southern France, farmers often sow poppies and other wild flowers in fields that otherwise go fallow. This naturally helps protect the soil from erosion. At other times, poppies self-sow and grow wild spontaneously. In either case, their profuse springtime display is pure joy to behold.

"Dejeuner a Roussillon", Oil on linen, 36x24"

"Dejeuner a Roussillon", Oil on linen, 36x24"

Price: US $2395 unframed, or $2625 framed.

For options and purchasing, please contact us.

About the painting:

The village of Roussillon is unique in the Vaucluse region because of its ochre colored buildings. In fact, the name refers to the ochre colored earth that was quarried nearby for use in tinting ochre colored paints and dyes. Roussillon was named one of the most beautiful villages in Provence, and here in this painting you can get an idea of why. The buildings are still colored in the beautiful reds, ochres, and yellows of yesteryear, paying homage to the earth that gave the town its name. This scene is one I came upon while walking through this gorgeous town. There is no better way to pass the time in France than dining al fresco

"Gardener's Day", Oil on canvas, 24x30"

"Gardener's Day", Oil on canvas, 24x30"

Price: US $1850 unframed, or $2095 framed.

For options and purchasing, please contact us.

About the painting:

I completed this painting after a visit to the French village of Giverny, where Claude Monet had his home and his famous gardens. I had the great privelege to paint in the gardens on a day when they were closed to the public. It was just me and a handful of other paintings, along with the stray gardener or two. Being there to capture the beauty of the place without the throngs of tourists that frequent it on other days was a real treat!

"Dancing Light, Ansouis", Oil on panel, 12x12"

"Dancing Light, Ansouis", Oil on panel, 12x12"

Price: US $650 unframed, or $750 framed.

For options and purchasing, please contact us.

About the painting:

Whenever I travel, I often find myself painting and photographing windows and doors. To me they suggest a both a kind of intimacy and a bit of mystery. In France and Italy many people take great care in dressing their windows and doorways with pots of beautiful flowers. Shutters and doors are often painted a lovely bright color, which over time fades and mellows from exposure to the elements. This little window lives somewhere in the charming French Provincial village of Ansouis. A beautiful place, it has flowers tucked in every nook and cranny, and gorgeous painted shutters and doors perfectly washed by the sun.

Irises, l'Abbaye Nouvelle, Oil on linen, 40x30"

Irises, l'Abbaye Nouvelle, Oil on linen, 40x30"

Price: US $3395 unframed, or $3675 framed.

About the painting:

I painted this piece on the heels of a springtime painting trip to the beautiful Lot and Dordogne Valleys in southern France. I painted a study of this magical site on location during the local "plant festival". Abbaye Nouvelle means "old abbey", but in fact, this site is partially in ruins and dates from the 13th centruy. Back home in the studio, I was able to expand on my ideas from the field study and recreate the experience on a much larger scale.

"Monet's Lily Pond", Oil on linen, 12x16"

"Monet's Lily Pond", Oil on linen, 12x16"

Price: US $830 unframed, or $925 framed.

About the painting:

Monet's garden in Giverny is beautiful in just about any weather. I seemed to experience a little bit of all of it when I visited and painted there on a trip to Normandy. My favorite part of the gardens was the beautiful lily pond. I loved the deep, rich greens and subtle blues that bounced around here in endless variations.A painter's dream! I painted this piece on location in the gardens. You might recognize this famous view of Monet's wisteria covered footbridge.
