Vibrant plein air and studio landscape paintings

Plein Air Gallery

These are paintings from life, created on location. I often reference these field studies to create larger studio works.

"Spring Renewal", Oil on panel, 9x12"

"Spring Renewal", Oil on panel, 9x12"

Price: US $545 unframed, or $625 framed.

For options and purchasing, please contact us.

About the painting:

This was painted on location at Maymont Park, one of Richmond Virginia's true treasures. Springtime in Virginia is always so incredibly beautiful. I always have a sense of hope and renewal when the flowering trees and spring bulbs come into bloom.

"Pear, Squared", Oil on panel, 8x8"

"Pear, Squared", Oil on panel, 8x8"

Price: US $425 unframed, or $495 framed.

For options and purchasing, please contact us.

About the painting:

Change is in the air. Nothing seems to change as fast in spring as the appearance of blooms on fruit trees. One minute they are ablaze with blooms, and the next they are leafing out. I painted this little ditty one morning right from my own garden.

"The Curved Bed" Oil on canvas, 10x10"

"The Curved Bed" Oil on canvas, 10x10"

Price: US $545 unframed, or $625 framed.

For options and purchasing, please contact us.

About the painting:

This was painted in my very own urban garden. In springtime there is still a sense of order, but in summer it’s a lot more chaotic. ( I really tend to crowd my gardens terribly. This is a bad habit but I’m trying to get better, and not be so afraid to pull things out, give plants away, or just toss them if need be.) The summer flowers are beautiful, but  I like it at this time of year too because you can still see the “bones” and underlying form before the wildness ensues.

"Delphiniums at Redesdale", Oil on panel, 9x12"

"Delphiniums at Redesdale", Oil on panel, 9x12"

Price: US $545 unframed, or $625 framed.

For options and purchasing, please contact us.

About the painting:

In springtime I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to paint this beautiful walled garden at a private turn-of-the-century residence tucked back in rolling hills near the banks of the James River.

This garden was designed by Charles Gillette, who is pretty famous around Virginia for his formal garden designs on stately homes such as Agecroft Hall, The Virginia House, and Tuckahoe Plantation. I believe he also had a hand in some of the early designs of the  Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens. The rain fell softly off and on during this painting. At several points things got pretty soggy, and I found myself jostling my brushes, paper towels, and my painting umbrella, which I was using as a rain umbrella for myself, my painting, and my palette. Oh the things we do for art!

"Morning in Eastport", Oil on canvas, 6x8"

"Morning in Eastport", Oil on canvas, 6x8"

Price: US $335 unframed, or $395 framed.

For options and purchasing, please contact us.

About the painting:

I encountered this sweet little urban scene while scouting around Eastport, MD during a plein air paint-out in Annapolis. I loved the way the light fell across the threshold of this scene, and delineated this modest but charming little church.

"Morning Surf", Oil on cavas, 9x12"

"Morning Surf", Oil on cavas, 9x12"

Price: US $545 unframed, or $625 framed.

For options and purchasing, please contact us.

About the painting:

I painted this on location  in the early morning on location at beautiful Outer Banks, North Carolina, just after sunrise. While the ocean waves can be a challenging subject matter to tackle from life, there's nothing better than painting on the beach. I can still taste the salt air.

"Sunrise at Nags Head", Oil on panel, 9x12"

"Sunrise at Nags Head", Oil on panel, 9x12"

Price: US $545 unframed, or $625 framed.

For options and purchasing, please contact us.

About the painting:

I painted this on location  in the early morning on location at beautiful Outer Banks, North Carolina. You have to get up pretty early in the morning to paint the sunrise from life. It's totally worth the effort though and what an exhilarating experience it is!

"Simple Brilliance" Oil on canvas, 6x8"

"Simple Brilliance" Oil on canvas, 6x8"

Price: US $335 unframed, or $395 framed.  For options and purchasing, please contact us.

About the painting:

Here’s a plein air painting I did one February en plein air of a lovely little spot on Fleming Street. The bougainvilla was in full bloom everywhere. It was a beautiful time to be in Key West!

"Just Out Back" Oil on linen, 12x12"

"Just Out Back" Oil on linen, 12x12"

Price: US $650 unframed, or $750 framed.

For options and purchasing, please contact us.

About the painting:

I painted this piece in my backyard garden in Ashland, VA. Sometimes the drama of the light is all you need to make even the most modest subjects into dynamic compositions.

"All is Quiet", Oil on linen, 8x8"

"All is Quiet", Oil on linen, 8x8"

Price: US $400  unframed, or $450 framed.

For options and purchasing, please contact us.

About the painting:

This painting shows the view from the upstairs window in my bedroom. Not exactly plein air, more like plein window. ;-)  I love the quietude and beauty of freshly fallen snow. I have seen this view so many times, but this lovely winter setting was one of the prettiest.

"Bathers on the James"

"Bathers on the James"

Price: US $545 unframed, or $625 framed.

For options and purchasing, please contact us.

About the painting:

This is part of a series of plein air paintings of the James River in Richmond, VA, that I have been exploring for some time. This view is right in the heart of downtown, across from the historic Tredegar Ironworks. I was painting down there one evening and discovered that this is a popular spot with locals who will come take a dip after work or school to cool off from the summer heat.

Price: US $545 unframed, or $625 framed.

For options and purchasing, please contact us.

About the painting:

This is part of a series of plein air paintings of the James River in Richmond, VA, that I have been exploring for some time. I painted this on an unseasonably warm winter day at Hollywood Cemetery. I hadn't plan to paint the train, but it pulled in about halfway through the painting, obscuring the tracks that I hadn't gotten to yet. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em! In the end, I reather liked it being there.

"Snowed Under" Oil on panel, 10x8"

"Snowed Under" Oil on panel, 10x8"

Price: US $450 unframed, or $525 framed.

For options and purchasing, please contact us.

About the painting:

We don't get much snow here in Richmond Virginia. So when we got over 6 inches, boy was I excited. Painting in the snow was a different experience for me. Not only was it cold, but the paint really stiffened up considerably due to the temperature. Nevertheless, I'm glad I stuck with it. Later that afternoon, the weight of all of that beautiful snow had melted, and the branches of my little crepe myrtle were completely bare again.

"Downstream", Oil on linen, 12x12"

"Downstream", Oil on linen, 12x12"

Price: US $650 unframed, or $750 framed.

For options and purchasing, please contact us.

About the painting:

This is part of a series of plein air paintings of the James River in Richmond, VA, that I have been exploring for some time. This location is just down the trail from an area called Texas Beach. Later in the spring, much of the distant river would have been obscured. But in the early spring before the trees leafed out, I enjoyed the lush violets and spring greens and the view through the branches that I  could see for miles.

"Falling Leaves on Wilmington Ave.", Oil on canvas, 8x6"

"Falling Leaves on Wilmington Ave.", Oil on canvas, 8x6"

Price: US $335 unframed, or $395 framed.

For options and purchasing, please contact us.

About the painting:

This was painted on location near my home in historic Ginter Park of Richmond, VA. The fall colors are always so intensely beautiful here, because of the abundance of sugar maples that line the streets.

The Cook's Garden, Oil on Canvas, 16x12"

The Cook's Garden, Oil on Canvas, 16x12"

Price: US $850 unframed, or $945 framed.

For options and purchasing, please contact us.

About the painting:

This little painting is one of my own back door. It leads into the kitchen, so I like to have lots of potted herbs growing within reach for the cook (who happens to be yours truly!) Potted red geraniums are always a must in my patio garden. They remind me of the Italian countryside villages, where they seemed to be a part of every porch stoop or window box.

"A Spot of Shade" Oil on Panel, 10x8"

Price: US $450 unframed, or $525 framed.

About the painting:

Richmond, Virginia has some lovely vibrant neighborhoods, and I have been lucky enough to have enjoyed living in several of them. This painting was done when I lived in the charming Arts and Crafts neighborhood of Bellevue in the city's Northside. Vignettes like this one of lovingly cared for, eclectic outdoor spaces were all around in this community.

About the painting:

This charming corner is just down the street from where I live. I believe this bike has been on the corner since the fall, in anticipation of the UCI Road World Championships that whizzed through our locality in September. In Ashland, decorated bikes were set up everywhere. Even after the races, many of the bikes have remained, their decorations changing according to the season. I have been eyeing this corner for a while now, enjoying the charm of it. When the daffodils popped up, that sealed the deal for me.

"Patio View, Midday", 10x8"

"Patio View, Midday", 10x8"

Price: US $450 unframed, or $525 framed.

About the painting:

Plein air is a French term referring to something painted out-of- doors,  "in the open air". This piece could actually be called both a still life and a plein air painting. I painted this view of my own little garden from my patio. I loved the dappled light of the foreground that gave way to the full warmth of bright sunlight in the garden beyond.

Price: US $545 unframed, or $625 framed.

About the painting:

I painted this on location in the late afternoon/early evening beneath the Avalon Fishing Pier in Kill Devil Hills, NC. The man stood there gazing at the ocean long enough for me to capture him. There were a lot of people camped out under the pier, and kids running everywhere. I presume they were doing what I was doing-- seeking refuge from the July sun. The scene I painted doesn't belie the chaos that was immediately surrounding me. But even amidst the hubbub, the ocean still evoked a relaxing effect.

About the painting:

Though I don't get there often enough, I have long maintained a love affair with North Carolina's Outer Banks. For the past few years we have spent our summer vacation in the same house in Kill Devil Hills. This was "our" little gazebo that led to the beach. I enjoyed the shadow play across the dunes and sway of the sea oats.

Though I don't get there often enough, I have long maintained a love affair with North Carolina's Outer Banks. For the past few years we have spent our summer vacation in the same house in Kill Devil Hills.

This was painted in the early morning. I took walks down to the pier several mornings from our beach house, and really got a lot of pleasure out of this approaching view, so I thought I'd better paint it.

About the painting:

Though I don't get there often enough, I have long maintained a love affair with North Carolina's Outer Banks. For the past few years we have spent our summer vacation in the same house in Kill Devil Hills. This was just a fun little midday piece I did from underneath a large beach canopy that my brother-in-law graciously set up. I later added the little umbrellas in the distance because it seemed to call for something up there. This lady was the only person that wanted to sit still for me while I painted her!

No sunrise at the beach is ever like the last, but this sunrise had the added bonus of an anchored Navy ship sitting on the horizon. I had to do this very quickly and loosely, as the entire light and color scheme changed extremely rapidly.
