“En Plein Air” is a French phrase meaning “in the open air”. In painting it refers to the little field studies done on location, a practice central to the approach of the French Impressionists. For me, painting on location is a way to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and the play of light, and to capture the fleeting moment and cement my impressions of a particular location, time and place. About the painting:
I painted this on location in the springtime at a quiet marsh on Mill Creek Road near Topping, VA. It was such a peaceful location, with crabs scurrying and herons wading through the water as I painted alongside them. It was the best of a plein air experience, to be honest. Just me and the critters who let me visit their world for a lovely, fleeting moment in time.
